QUESTION: My upper teeth is not tidy because I did not listen to the dentist instruction when I was young, I should push my new teeth using my tounge so that my teeth will be tidy. I was thinking of wearing braces. Is it haram?

ENGLISH ANSWER: The ruling of modifying the creation of Allah S.W.T., is prohibited. This is mentioned by the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam in a hadith:

عن عبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه قال : ( لعن الله….. والمتفلجات للحسن ، المغيرات خلق الله ) رواه الشيخان

From his Companion, Abdullah bin Mas’ud; Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

“Verily, Allah curse those who grind or file his/her teeth for aesthetic, and those who modify the creation of Allah Subhanahu Wa-Ta’Aala”

Narrated by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim. Hadith can be found at the Book (Nailul Awtar) And The Book (Khisolul Fitr)

Definition of GRINDING AND MODIFYING THE TEETH in the hadith mentioned

Using an instrument, tools to beautify the teeth aesthetically, Or to look young;

Hereby the prohibition are for the purpose of Aesthetic.

However, the ruling differs, if the purpose is to seek medical treatment. Hence, this is allowed with the condition that, the doctor advised that your situation is based upon severe irregularities or abnormalities.

JAWAPAN: Hukum bagi merubahkan ciptaan Allah subhanahu wa-ta’ala adalah: Haram, Ini seperti mana disebutkan oleh Baginda Nabi Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam Dalam Sebuah Hadith:

Daripada Sahabat Abdullah Bin Mas’ud Berkata : Sabda Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam :

Sesungguhnya Allah melaknat orang-orang yang meng-asah giginya kerana mencantikkannya dan orang-orang yang mengubahkan ciptaan Allah subhanahu wa-ta’ala)

Dirwayatkan oleh Imam Bukhari dan Imam Muslim .

Hadith ini boleh didapatkan di kitab (Nailul Awtar) dan kitab (Khisolul Fitrah)

Definasi MENGASAH GIGI DAN PERUBAHAN dalam Hadith Tersebut adalah Menggunakan sesuatu alat untuk mencatikkan gigi (Aesthetic) atau untuk kelihatan muda, maka yang diharamkan disini adalah untuk tujuan kecantikan .

Akan tetapi berbeza pula hukumnya Jika Ia untuk tujuan berubat atau rawatan, maka ia diperbolehkan dengan syarat doktor memberitahu bahawa ini adalah satu tidak kebiasaan (Severe Irregularities/Abnormalities) .
